Checked baggage included with the fares we recorded: 20 kg. Airlines sell more; this is what the cheapest fares carried.

Malaysia Airlines (MH) calls itself the national carrier of Malaysia, and is part of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG). Its main hub is Terminal 1 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA, airport code KUL), and the direct domestic routes recorded for it all start there. The check-in and baggage rules below are the airline's own, as published in September 2026.
A domestic Malaysia Airlines passenger uses KLIA Terminal 1, which the airline's own site calls its main hub. Terminal 2 is AirAsia's domestic terminal, so check that your booking says Terminal 1 before you set off for the airport. KLIA is about 45km south of Kuala Lumpur city centre, in Sepang, Selangor.
The airline's Terminal 1 guide, as read in September 2026, puts domestic check-in on Level 5: Economy at row B, where the self-service bag drop is too, Enrich Platinum members at D13 to D14 and Business at D15 to D18. Domestic arrivals come in at Gates A and B on Level 3 of the Main Terminal, with baggage claim on belts K, L and M. Firefly, another Malaysia Aviation Group airline, moved its jet services from Subang to Terminal 1 on 19 August 2025.
On domestic flights Malaysia Airlines counts checked baggage by weight, and the allowance depends on the fare brand you book. The table shows what the airline currently allows, from its checked baggage page as read in September 2026, under a weight concept in force since 1 December 2021. Check the allowance on your own booking before you fly, because the airline can change it.
| Fare brand | Cabin | Checked baggage, domestic |
|---|---|---|
| Economy Value | Economy | 20kg |
| Economy Basic | Economy | 25kg |
| Economy Flex/Shuttle | Economy | 35kg |
| Business Basic | Business | 40kg |
| Business Flex/Shuttle | Business | 50kg |
| Business Suite | Business | 55kg |
In Economy the airline allows one cabin piece of up to 7kg, and that includes one personal item. In Business and Business Suite it allows two pieces with a combined weight of up to 14kg, no more than 7kg each, again including one personal item. A bag for the overhead bin can measure up to 56 x 36 x 23cm, and an item under the seat up to 25 x 36 x 25cm.
Online check-in, on the website or the MH App, opens 48 hours before departure and closes 90 minutes before it. At the airport the check-in counter closes 60 minutes before departure, and on domestic flights the boarding gate closes 30 minutes before.
Self-check-in is mandatory for Economy passengers at KLIA. The exceptions the airline lists are passengers with a special service request, groups of more than nine and standby passengers. Its check-in page names self-service kiosks at Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Kota Bharu, Johor Bahru and Langkawi.
Malaysia Airlines' travel documents page says that for domestic flights within Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak, original documents must be presented for verification. Carry the original of whichever identity document you travel on.
For domestic travel departing Sabah or Sarawak, the Immigration Department of Malaysia lists the documents it accepts, one of which must be shown with a valid pass and a boarding pass. The list includes a Malaysian passport, a Restricted Travel Document, a MyKad, a MyKid and a birth certificate, and the department's page gives the one list for both states. Read the full list there before you fly.
The Section 66 exemption endorsement is a separate matter that relates only to Sabah: it is issued only by the Sabah State Immigration Department.
