Bintulu Airport (BTU) serves Bintulu, a town on the central coast of Sarawak, and is run by Malaysia Airports. Its direct domestic routes include Kuala Lumpur, and Kuching, Miri and Sibu within Sarawak. Malaysians from Peninsular Malaysia who land here from Kuala Lumpur pass an immigration counter in the arrival hall, although the flight is domestic.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) aerodrome entry, in the edition effective 11 August 2026, places Bintulu Airport 9 km from Bintulu Mosque in town on a bearing of 203 degrees, or 20 km by road. It names Malaysia Airports as the aerodrome operator, with CAAM providing air traffic control.
Other published figures differ: the Bintulu Development Authority gives about 23 km from the town centre, and Sarawak's Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development put the current travel distance at 25 km in April 2026.
The Sarawak Tourism Board describes Bintulu as a town that became an industrial hub with the discovery of offshore natural gas reserves in the 1960s, and a centre of Malaysia's oil and gas industries today.
AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, AirBorneo and Batik Air Malaysia fly domestic routes from Bintulu. Direct domestic flights recorded from Bintulu go to:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur | Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) | AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia |
| Kuching | Kuching International Airport (KCH) | AirAsia |
| Miri | Miri Airport (MYY) | AirBorneo |
| Sibu | Sibu Airport (SBW) | AirBorneo |
AirBorneo, which describes itself as Sarawak's state-owned full-service airline, flies Bintulu's routes to Miri and Sibu. In March 2026 it introduced online check-in on routes flown by its ATR 72-500 fleet, opening 48 hours before departure and closing 90 minutes before take-off, and passengers who check in online with checked baggage can go straight to the baggage drop counter. Flights on its Twin Otter aircraft still check in at the airport counter, so check which aircraft your Bintulu flight uses before relying on online check-in.
AirBorneo's contact page, as at September 2026, lists ticket offices in other towns but not in Bintulu. Its call centre takes reservations and ticketing enquiries on 1300 22 1388 within Malaysia.
According to the Immigration Department of Malaysia, Section 66 of the Immigration Act 1959/63 restricts citizens' right of entry to Sabah and Sarawak, and makes a citizen subject to holding a pass or permit to enter and be there. For a Malaysian from Peninsular Malaysia flying in from Kuala Lumpur, that is dealt with at the immigration counters in Bintulu Airport's arrival hall, which issue the Document in Lieu of Internal Travel Document.
The document is an alternative to a Malaysian passport or a Restricted Travel Document. It is valid for a single journey, allows a stay on a Social or Business Visit Pass of up to three months, and is issued without charge. Applicants aged 12 and over show an identity card such as MyKad, or a police or military identity card, while children under 12 show a birth or adoption certificate, and a parent's or guardian's permission is not required.
A stay of more than three months calls for a Restricted Travel Document, which the Immigration Department issues to Malaysian citizens from Peninsular Malaysia for entry, exit and temporary stays in Sabah and Sarawak. It is valid for five years, needs two photographs, and needs parental consent for an applicant under 18. The department's Sarawak issuing offices include the Bintulu Immigration Office.
To leave Sarawak on a domestic journey, such as a flight from Bintulu to Kuala Lumpur, the Immigration Department lists three requirements: an accepted identity or travel document, a valid pass, and a boarding pass as proof that you are a genuine passenger. Accepted documents include a Malaysian international passport, a Restricted Travel Document, a MyKad, a MyKid and a birth certificate. Malaysia Airlines asks for original documents, for verification, on domestic flights within Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.
The CAAM aerodrome entry lists taxi, e-hailing and car hire for getting to and from the airport.
Sarawak's Public Works Department reported in February 2026 that construction of a 4.1 km dual carriageway to Bintulu Airport was under way and expected to be fully completed by October 2027. A project fact sheet quoted by DayakDaily in May 2026 described the four-lane road, from the Jepak Roundabout to the Bintulu Airport Roundabout, as ahead of schedule as of April 2026.
In April 2026 Sarawak's Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development said the new road was expected to cut the trip between town and the airport to under eight kilometres and about 10 minutes, from nearly 30 minutes by the current route. Until the road opens, allow for the longer drive when you plan the trip to the airport.
The CAAM entry lists one runway, 17/35, which is 2,745 m long and 45 m wide with an asphalt surface, at an airport elevation of 23 m (75 ft).
The same entry does not list the airport operator's hours as round the clock. Security is the only service it lists as open 24 hours.
For passengers, the entry lists a restaurant at the airport terminal and an auto teller machine (ATM) at the airport, with a bank, a post office and hotels in town. The hospital it names is Bintulu Hospital on Jalan Nyabu, 20 km from the airport.
A Malaysian from Peninsular Malaysia does, at the immigration counters in the arrival hall. The Document in Lieu of Internal Travel Document is issued there without charge, for a single journey and a stay of up to three months on a Social or Business Visit Pass, on an identity card such as MyKad from age 12 or a birth or adoption certificate under 12. Anyone else should check the Immigration Department's pages for their own documents before travelling.
AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia are recorded flying direct from Bintulu to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. AirAsia also flies direct from Bintulu to Kuching.
AirBorneo is recorded flying direct from Bintulu to Miri and Sibu. Online check-in covers routes flown by its ATR 72-500 fleet but not its Twin Otter flights, so check which aircraft your flight uses.
The CAAM aerodrome entry puts it 20 km by road from town, and 9 km from Bintulu Mosque. A dual carriageway from the Jepak Roundabout to the airport is due for completion by October 2027, and Sarawak's deputy infrastructure minister said in April 2026 that it should cut the trip to about 10 minutes.
For leaving Sarawak on a domestic journey, the Immigration Department lists an accepted identity or travel document such as a MyKad, a Malaysian international passport or a Restricted Travel Document, a valid pass, and your boarding pass. If you fly with Malaysia Airlines, carry the originals: it asks for original documents on domestic flights within Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.
