Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) is the airport for Kuala Terengganu, the capital of Terengganu state on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, and it is the airport people mean by "Kuala Terengganu airport". It sits at Gong Badak, north-west of the city, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) puts it 8 km from Kuala Terengganu. Malaysia Airports runs it.

CAAM's aerodrome entry is headed Kuala Terengganu/Sultan Mahmud. Firefly and Malaysia Airlines sell the destination as Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia Airlines with the code TGG, while AirAsia's page names Sultan Mahmud Airport under the same code. In Malay it is Lapangan Terbang Sultan Mahmud, shortened to LTSM by the Terengganu press and state media.

Getting between the airport and Kuala Terengganu

BAS.MY Kuala Terengganu route T10, Kuala Terengganu to Jeti Merang, stops at the airport: the official route map marks a stop named Lapangan Terbang Sultan Mahmud on the branch through Seberang Takir. The BAS.MY Kuala Terengganu bus network, a Ministry of Transport programme operated by Mara Liner Sdn Bhd, was officially launched on 22 September 2025. Because T10 runs between the city and Merang Jetty, the one route links the airport with both.

On the BAS.MY Kuala Terengganu route map, T10 is the one route marked at the airport stop, so reaching a place that T10 does not serve means changing buses.

As of 2011, CAAM listed taxi services as the airport's transport.

From the airport to Redang, Lang Tengah and the Perhentian Islands

Merang Jetty, for Redang and Lang Tengah

Merang Jetty is managed by VigourMarine Transtour Sdn Bhd, whose boats run to Redang, Lang Tengah and the Perhentian Islands. The same company runs a shared van from the airport to Merang Jetty, a trip of about 30 km that it puts at about 45 minutes, carrying up to 10 passengers. BAS.MY route T10 also runs between the airport and Merang Jetty.

The van runs at fixed departure times set by the operator, so check that your flight lands in time for one before you rely on it. Island resorts may arrange their own transfers: Redang Pelangi Resort, for one, offers Kuala Terengganu airport transfers and sends the driver's details by text message the day before.

Kuala Besut Jetty, for the Perhentian Islands

Perhentian Trans Holiday Sdn Bhd runs boats from Kuala Besut Jetty to the Perhentian Islands, a crossing of about 21 km that takes 30 to 45 minutes. The operator names Kuala Terengganu Airport as one way to reach Kuala Besut, alongside Kota Bharu town and Kota Bharu Airport. It also lists a marine park conservation charge, separate from the boat fare.

From this airport, Merang Jetty is also an option: VigourMarine Transtour lists boats from there to the Perhentian Islands, and the airport van and BAS.MY route T10 both serve Merang Jetty.

The north-east monsoon and the islands

The east coast of Peninsular Malaysia gets spells of heavy rain in the north-east monsoon, and the climate guide from Malaysia's weather service, MetMalaysia, names November, December and January as the wettest months in the east coast states.

The 2025/2026 north-east monsoon began on 13 November 2025, and Malaysia's National Security Council marked its end with the start of a transition phase on 29 March 2026. On 16 November 2025 the Terengganu state government denied that it had ordered the tourist islands closed for the monsoon. It said chalet and resort closures were the operators' own choice, used for maintenance, and that ferries and boats were still carrying visitors to Kapas, Perhentian and Redang, with the Marine Department and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency monitoring boat movements and sea and weather conditions.

Redang Pelangi Resort describes April to October as the good-weather months, with the monsoon bringing heavy rain and waves to Redang from December to February, and says March can be affected. If your dates fall between November and March, check directly with your resort and the boat operator that both will be running.

The terminal

Sultan Mahmud Airport has one terminal building. As of 2011, CAAM listed a cafeteria in the terminal building and put the general hospital 15 km away.

Passenger numbers and plans

Terengganu's state tourism committee put the airport's traffic at 611,412 passengers in 2022 and 593,095 in 2023, figures reported in April 2024. In the same report the state said it had identified destinations for international flights to the airport, with talks with airlines at an early stage.

The Ministry of Transport's Budget 2026 list of airport upgrades, published in October 2025, named other airports, among them Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Miri, and not Kuala Terengganu.
