Kuantan Airport (KUA) is the airport for Kuantan, in Pahang on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) puts it 14 km from the Kuantan General Post Office. Malaysia Airports runs the airport, and air traffic control comes from Malaysia's air force at its Kuantan Air Base, on the same airfield.

CAAM's aerodrome entry is headed Kuantan Airport, and its airport glossary lists it as Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport. Malaysia Airlines sells the destination simply as Kuantan.

Getting between Kuantan Airport and the city

CAAM's entry lists transport at the airport as available, and a taxi stand and an outdoor car park are reported at the terminal.

Buses since Rapid Kuantan ended

Travel guides that give Rapid Kuantan route 303 for the airport are out of date: Rapid Kuantan stopped running on 14 December 2025. Its services were taken over by Sanwa Tours, which runs the BAS.MY Kuantan network under the supervision of the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).

The BAS.MY Kuantan route list names no route for the airport. On the official map for route C10, Hentian Bandar to Gambang Resort, the line runs along the main road past the airport, but the map marks no stops. Check with BAS.MY whether and where C10 stops near the terminal before you plan around a bus.

BAS.MY routes from Hentian Bandar

Once in the city, BAS.MY Kuantan routes from the Hentian Bandar hub reach Teluk Cempedak (C20), Pekan (C40), Sungai Lembing (C50) and Gambang Resort (C10). For Cherating, route C64 runs from Balok Makmur, which route C60 serves.

The terminal and passenger facilities

CAAM's list of passenger facilities at the airport gives restaurants, transport and a bank cash machine, and it lists no tourist office. The same list puts Kuantan Hospital 15 km away, a post office 6 km away at Jaya Gading, and hotels in Kuantan town, 17 km away.

Passengers are reported to walk between the aircraft and the terminal, with no aerobridge, so be ready for a walk across the apron.

An airfield shared with the air force

In CAAM's entry for the edition effective 11 August 2026, Malaysia Airports is the aerodrome operator and the air force's Kuantan Air Base provides air traffic control. The same entry routes commercial aircraft between the main apron and the runway by a single taxiway, Taxiway H, and has departing aircraft hold on the apron while landing aircraft taxi in.

The planned Kuantan International Airport at Gebeng

A new airport, Kuantan International Airport, is planned at Gebeng. On 12 May 2026 the chairman of Pahang's state committee for investment said it was expected to be completed by 2031, against an original plan to operate in 2026. He said the technical requirements, the implementation structure and the involvement of strategic investors were still being finalised.

He described the project as privately financed, with no state or federal funds.

The north-east monsoon

Malaysia's National Security Council expected the 2025/2026 north-east monsoon to run from 13 November 2025 into March 2026, with five to seven episodes of heavy rain, and warned of rough seas and strong winds in the South China Sea, including around the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It marked the end of that monsoon with a transition phase from 29 March 2026.

If your trip falls between November and March, check the weather warnings before you travel.
