Kuantan is the state capital of Pahang, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia at the mouth of the Kuantan River. It has been the state capital since 1955, and its role as a trading port goes back centuries. In and around the city are the Kuantan 188 tower on the riverfront, the beach at Teluk Cempedak, the former tin-mining town of Sungai Lembing and the beaches at Cherating.
Kuantan 188 stands beside a riverfront esplanade on Jalan Besar, 25000 Kuantan, and was officially opened on 21 February 2021. Its operator describes an observation deck with 360-degree views, a glass-floored skybridge called the Sky Deck, a Skywalk 104 metres up and an Antenna Climb that goes 188 metres up. The tower also has a zipline, a restaurant deck, a cafe, steamboat dining and pickleball courts.
The tower's own site gives its hours as 10am to 10pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to midnight Friday to Sunday (September 2026). Hours can change, so check with the tower before you go. The tower's site also mentions river cruise tours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Teluk Cempedak is a beach a few kilometres east of the town centre, with a promenade and swimming, sailing and surfing. Pahang's tourism portal mentions a local food court, an international fast food outlet and a five-star resort hotel nearby. The beach is popular with people from Kuantan and can get busy at weekends.
BAS.MY Kuantan route C20 runs between the Hentian Bandar city bus hub and Teluk Cempedak.
The beachfront from Beserah to Balok is lined with fishing villages. For food, the tourism portal points to the seafood restaurants at Tanjung Lumpur and to two local dishes, nasi dagang and grilled fish.
The north-east monsoon runs from November to March, and the Malaysian Meteorological Department names Pahang among the east coast states that get heavy rain and floods from it. The National Security Council dated the 2025/2026 monsoon from 13 November 2025 to the start of the transition phase on 29 March 2026.
On 31 October 2025 the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency urged the public in Pahang to put off recreational trips to islands and beaches during that monsoon. If a beach is the reason for your trip, the months from November to March are the ones to plan around.
The south-west monsoon, from late May to September, is relatively drier across most of the country. Turtle nesting at Cherating is given as April to September, at its peak from May to August.
Flights land at Kuantan Airport (KUA), also known as Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport, which the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) places 14 km from Kuantan General Post Office. Malaysia Airports operates it, and air traffic control on the same airfield is provided by the Royal Malaysian Air Force's Kuantan Air Base. None of the BAS.MY Kuantan bus routes is named for the airport, so plan how you will get into town before you land.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Kuantan go to:

Airlines change their schedules, so check the route page before booking. The Kuala Lumpur destination guide covers the other end of the route, and the Malaysia travel guide covers the country as a whole.
On 12 May 2026 a Pahang state committee chairman for investment said a new Kuantan International Airport at Gebeng was expected to be completed in 2031, pending requirements from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia and the Ministry of Transport.
BAS.MY Kuantan, run by Sanwa Tours (M) Sdn. Bhd., took over the city's buses from 15 December 2025, after Rapid Kuantan ended its service. Its listed routes from the Hentian Bandar hub include Teluk Cempedak (C20), Terminal Sentral Kuantan (C33), Pekan (C40) and Sungai Lembing (C50). Route C64 is listed as running between Balok Makmur and Cherating.
Sungai Lembing is a former tin-mining town that makes a day trip from Kuantan. The British company Pahang Consolidated Company Limited (PCCL) ran the mines there for decades in the twentieth century.
Pahang's tourism portal names the Hanging Bridge, Gunung Tapis Park, Pasir Puteri River, Sunrise Hill and a 3D gallery among the things to see. The same page describes Panorama Hill as a sunrise viewpoint with a climb of about 45 minutes on average. It also puts Charah Caves 25 km from Kuantan, with one cave holding a reclining Buddha statue 8.1 metres long.
The Sungai Lembing Museum (Muzium Sungai Lembing) is run by the Department of Museums Malaysia. The department's page gives it as open every day from 9am to 5pm, and closed on the first two days of Hari Raya Puasa (Eid al-Fitr) and the first day of Hari Raya Qurban (Eid al-Adha) (September 2026). The 2027 federal schedule puts those holidays on 10 and 11 March and 17 May, dates that are subject to change. Check with the museum before you go: a tourism portal lists a closure on the first Monday of each month that the department's page does not.
A tourism portal names displays on PCCL, the landscape, mining equipment and clothing, and a mining diorama. The address is Sungai Lembing, 26200 Pahang.
Cherating is in Kuantan district and has long sandy beaches. A tourism portal gives the drive as about 35 minutes from Kuantan town and names activities including windsurfing, kite surfing, a mangrove tour, a fireflies tour, snorkelling and scuba diving. BAS.MY Kuantan route C64 runs between Balok Makmur and Cherating.
The Department of Fisheries Malaysia includes the Cherating, Pahang Turtle Conservation and Information Centre among its turtle centres in Peninsular Malaysia. The department says these centres provide information, shelter, hatching, research and treatment for stranded or injured turtles. Check with the department that the centre is open before you go.
In July 2025 the Pahang fisheries department said it would keep monitoring four turtle landing sites in the state, Pantai Cherating among them. Keep your distance from nesting turtles.
Kuantan Airport (KUA), also known as Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport, serves Kuantan and is 14 km from Kuantan General Post Office according to CAAM. Direct flights recorded from it go to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, on Malaysia Airlines.
The tower's own site lists 10am to 10pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to midnight Friday to Sunday (September 2026). Hours can change, so check with the tower before you go.
