Mukah Airport (MKM) is 7 km from Mukah, a coastal town in Sarawak at the mouth of the Mukah River. The present airport opened for passenger services in June 2021, replacing an older airstrip, and its runway was built to take larger aircraft than the old one could. The airline recorded here is AirBorneo, which took over all services previously operated by MASwings on 1 January 2026.

Flights from Mukah Airport

Direct domestic flights recorded from Mukah Airport go to:

AirBorneo's aircraft type varies by airstrip and route, and its first Kuching to Mukah flight, reported by The Star in January 2026, was an ATR 72-500. The airline's rules on check-in, baggage and children travelling alone differ between the ATR and the Twin Otter, so check which aircraft operates your flight before you pack.

AirBorneo Check-in and Baggage Rules by Aircraft

AirBorneo sets these rules for its Twin Otter and ATR 72-500 services, as of September 2026:

In the airline's own words, check-in deadlines vary by airport, so confirm the Mukah deadline with AirBorneo when you book. The full terms are in AirBorneo's conditions of carriage.

Haze, Weather and Cancelled AirBorneo Flights

On 1 September 2026, haze led AirBorneo to cancel two flights based at Kuching, one of them Kuching to Mukah, although runway visibility at Kuching International Airport stayed above the airport's minimum. AirBorneo's conditions of carriage list adverse weather among the causes of cancellation or delay that are outside the airline's control.

When that applies, AirBorneo has no immediate obligation to carry you, re-route you or refund you, though it says it will make reasonable efforts to assist. Leave time between a Mukah flight and any onward connection.

Entering Sarawak from Peninsular Malaysia

A Malaysian citizen travelling from Peninsular Malaysia needs a pass to enter Sarawak, even on a domestic journey. For a short stay, the Document in Lieu of Internal Travel Document is issued at the immigration counters in Sarawak airport arrival halls. It covers a single journey and permits a Social or Business Visit Pass of up to three months.

To get it, show your identity card (MyKad) if you are 12 or over, or your birth certificate if you are under 12. For a stay of more than three months, the Immigration Department issues a Restricted Travel Document, valid for five years.

Mukah Airport: What It Was Built For, Runway and Facilities

The Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) describes the airport as a rural transport hub for freight as well as passengers. It was built to carry the area's exports of sago, pineapples, umai (a Melanau dish made from sago) and aquaculture products, and to support the distribution of vaccines to rural areas.

The runway is 1,500 m long and 30 m wide. The airport has an air traffic control tower, offices for the aviation authorities, meteorological services and a fire and rescue department, along with runway visual range equipment and navigation systems.

Distance to Mukah Town, Parking and the Batang Mukah Bridge

The airport is 7 km from Mukah town, and its car park has spaces for 100 cars, 20 taxis, two buses and 20 motorcycles. Settle how you will cover that distance before you land.

The Batang Mukah Bridge opened on 16 March 2026, carrying the Mukah to Balingian road across the Mukah River in place of a ferry crossing.

Mukah Town and the Melanau Heartland

Mukah is known as the Melanau Heartland: it is the original home of the Melanau people, who are the majority in the town. The Sarawak Tourism Board names the Lamin Dana cultural centre, a traditional Melanau longhouse, and Mukah Beach among the town's main attractions.

The sago factory in Mukah's old town, built around 1880, is gazetted as a historical monument under the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance 2019. The Batang Mukah, Batang Oya, Batang Igan and Batang Rajang rivers are central to moving goods in the area, including sago logs taken by river to processing factories.

The Kaul Festival (Pesta Kaul) is a Melanau ritual marking the end of the monsoon season and the start of the fishing season. It is held at Tapak Pesta Kaul Mukah on the Mukah River estuary, with boat processions, traditional games and food.
